Thanks to Modders, You Can Now Play SteamVR Games with a PSVR Headset

Price remains one of the main obstacles preventing the widespread adoption of virtual reality, but the modders over at Trinus VR recently came up with a free way to unlock the most extensive VR library to the most inexpensive headset. Specifically, they've made it so Sony's PlayStationVR—which also usually ranks as the most comfortable headset—can now play any game in Steam's virtual reality library on the PC. Normally you'd need a PlayStation 4 to use the PSVR.

It's not even that difficult to get up and running, as a YouTuber named Matownerie shows in the video above. You'll just need a USB cable and an HDMI cable to connect it to your PC, much as you would when hooking up the headset to your PS4. Essentially the driver allows the $400 PSVR headset to receive the same communication that's meant for Steam's preferred $800 HTC Vive headset.

But keep in mind that it's not a perfect translation. Trinus VR's driver currently only runs at 60hz and doesn't support camera tracking, although modders supposedly are already hard at work developing solutions for each issue. For now, though, that means you'll have to use a regular gamepad with the setup rather than the fancy motion controllers for either the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. That makes this kind of a half-baked solution at best for now, but then I suppose you get what you pay for.

This also isn't the first time that Trinus VR has made a valiant attempt to bring virtual reality to the masses. They've also released an app that lets you play 3D games in virtual reality on both iOS and Android systems with the humble Google Cardboard. Much like the PSVR driver, though, it's an appealing but imperfect solution at best.
