Fish Are Having a Real Hard Time in Space

Fish traveling aboard the International Space Station in 2014 experienced a near-immediate reduction in bone density upon encountering the microgravity environment of orbit. This is according to research published recently in Scientific Reports by a team of biologists at Tokyo Institute of Technology who conducted remote imaging experiments on newly-hatched medaka fish launched into space.

The general findings are concerning but not all that surprising. The dramatic effects of microgravity on bone density have been observed in human astronauts aboard the ISS, where bone deterioration begins after about 20 days in orbit in a process resembling the sort of osteoporosis more often associated with old age. The mechanisms behind this, however, are still being explored, both for the sake of long-term space travel and for treating osteoporosis here on Earth's surface. And so we have medaka fish, whose process of skeletogenesis is similar to our own.

"Under microgravity, there are several changes in the animal body, such as fluid shift, increase in blood pressure, and dizziness," Akira Kudo, the study's lead author, and colleagues explain. "In particular, bone mineral density is decreased under microgravity; but it is unclear how osteoblasts or osteoclasts respond early in orbit."

To better understand these biological effects of “microgravitational stress,” there are two varieties of cell that need to be observed: osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The prior are responsible for breaking down bone tissue, a key role in repairing and maintaining bones, while the latter secrete the matrix used in bone formation.

The researchers were able to observe the activity of these cells live from a remote lab at Tsukuba Space Center using fluorescence microscopy. Basically, they created transgenic fish that would glow under different wavelengths of light. The fish were actually hatched at Baikonur Cosmodrome, the Soyuz rocket launch site in Kazakhstan, after being transported from Japan as eggs by Kudo and co.

The fish spent the first six weeks of their strange lives at the launch site before being embedded in a special gel for their voyage aboard Soyuz flight TMA-10M. They then spent the next two months being reared aboard the ISS. The first eight days of that stay were spent underneath a fluorescence microscope as researchers on Earth observed the fish's bone cells misbehaving in real-time. These observations were compared to an Earth-bound control group of medaka fish.

Gene expression markers for both varieties of bone cell increased significantly from the control group of medaka on Earth. On the very first day, this increase was seen in osteoclasts, where it persisted for up to eight days. In osteoblasts, the increase came four days following arrival at the ISS. The osteoclast increase was seen in two bone-specific genes: osterix and osteocalcin. Normally, these appear in fish development at different phases, with osterix appearing several days before osteocalcin. Here, they appeared simultaneously, offering a new clue into the fundamental mechanism behind spaceflight-related bone loss, and, perhaps, the widespread but poorly treated affliction of old-age, osteoporosis.

Of course, we're still just talking about lab-bred fish on a space station, so obviously more research is needed if we're to ever apply this knowledge to humans. But tucked into the paper, Kudo and his team tease at the possibility of their research opening up a whole new scientific field: "gravitational biology."

  1. I have a few comments regarding skeletogenesis, the 9/11 memorials sports and movie recording, and the male sex drive. First of all,if you were a male sex addict and had a craving for your own feeling almost every day for the past 10 years not in so many words or all details but with a female not present with you in person as instead videos of females on youtube meaning no harm towards any or not even storing any of their videos in folders on your laptop computer but just playing by the rules so to speak watching them maybe with a little bit of rewind, fas forward, and pause action going on to be honest, would these actions be a threat to or illegal in any way ? Another part of the picture would be the fact that I visited the 9/11 memorial in Panama City, FL back in Winter-Spring 2004 and I sat down to rest and get out of the sun for a few minutes. Oddly enough I had a battery operated walkman on playing the song "Mother" by Danzig, a Heavy Metal rock group. Anyway I was sitting in the back of it on the middle bench with a pair of relatively loose fitting red shorts on with no underwear lol as I was getting ready to do my laundry. I did not spit, urinate, or even cum while I was there. So I happened to gaze into the black marble with gold spots and my reflection disapeared for a few seconds then came back. When this occurred a reflection of the sun popped out from somewhere in front of the memorial and for some reason it follows me wherever I go to. There also seems to be a reflection or some kind of reflective painting bouncing around through peoples glasses in stadiums and arenas. The reflection painting if you want to call it that seems to float and find its way to the sports control desks personalities during pre game halftime and post game shows. Its odd because it appears that a reflection of the doors of where I live also bounces around in reflection of persons glasses which I find a little The only reason that I can think of is that it is a spinning CD trying to seek out and bust people that record games and events that are not authorized to do so. I wont lie. I used to tape games myself to watch at a later time also with a slight infatuation for college and pro cheerleaders a while back. I have not taped anything in over four years now and I dont think I am ever going to record anything again due to things that I have learned by doing so. Even on TWC/Spectrum DVD rew, ff, and pause I refuse to screw around with and people who are not authorized or dont have permission to do this have no idea what they are really screwing with. The reflection painting in glasses also appear in movies. I have never recorded any movies to my hard drive like that and I probably never will. Even though it does not say dont do it doesnt mean that you should. I am a single celibate man and if I had kids which I dont I would severely stress that to them about the dangers of recording things for personal use and exactly what you would be responsible for by doing so. Anyway I was homeless for around 5 years all over the country as this reflection of the sun followed me bouncing around in car reflections in traffic. That reflection painting also appears in others glasses around me where I live at for some reason. I only see an outside in reflection of myself with glasses on. Anyway, relating to the subject of skeletogenesis I really do not want to go through a traumatic physical change. I am really sorry but not for some of the hardships that people endure. I have my own also with two dehydrated discs in my neck and a straightened out cervical lordosis bone. I have had this condition for over 4 years now but I will eventually heal from as there is no doubt in my mind. If I am in the wrong I dont know as I dont know the law all that well but I try to play by the rules. I am hoping that one day I will get lucky and receive some kind of inheritance or trust fund to try and make something of myself. Thanks. "Dont heal the bone" "Let the bone heal you!"
